AI Is Not Just a Technology Project

A lot of organisations are currently treating AI like a software rollout. Buy some licences, run a few workshops, give people access to ChatGPT, and hope productivity magically improves. That approach is going to fail.

The biggest lesson from recent AI discussions is that AI is not primarily a technology challenge. It is an organisational change challenge. The tools are actually the easy part. The difficult part is changing behaviour, governance, business models, decision-making, communication styles, pricing structures, and operational thinking.

AI Changes More Than Just Productivity

Many organisations initially focus on productivity gains. “How much time can we save?” That matters, but it is only part of the picture.

AI is fundamentally changing how businesses create value. For decades, many industries sold time. AI starts disrupting that model very quickly.

If a task that once took eight hours now takes thirty minutes, organisations need to ask difficult questions:

  • Do we pass savings directly to customers?
  • Do we charge for outcomes instead?
  • Do we shift toward intellectual property and expertise?
  • What happens when competitors have the same tools?

Scarcity Is Changing

AI is reducing barriers to entry in many industries. Tasks that once required specialist capability can now be partially automated.

That means organisations need to rethink their real unique selling proposition. Increasingly, value will come from experience, governance, trust, security, integration capability, industry understanding, human judgement, and strategic thinking.

One of the strongest points raised during discussions was the risk of poorly governed AI solutions. Someone builds a quick AI workflow at home, connects it into a live business system, uses customer data, and bypasses governance entirely.

AI adoption needs proper controls, including security reviews, gate processes, approval frameworks, integration standards, data governance, and access controls.

AI Champions Matter

The organisations seeing the best results are usually not rolling AI out randomly across the business. Instead, they identify practical people who test ideas, identify use cases, share learnings, support others, and build momentum internally.

One particularly interesting discussion focused on investment allocation:

  • 70% people enablement
  • 20% governance and process
  • 10% tools

Most AI tools are relatively easy to access now. The real challenge is helping people understand AI, use it safely, apply it properly, and rethink workflows.

The Real Investment Is People

New Zealand Has a Big Opportunity

New Zealand has a relatively small workforce and ongoing productivity challenges. AI could genuinely help improve national productivity without simply relying on workforce growth or immigration.

AI is not just another software project. It changes workflows, governance, pricing models, organisational structures, and competitive advantages.

That is exactly why change management matters.
